Watch the Awkward First Steps of a Newborn Giraffe
September 6, 2018 - With predators all around, giraffe calves are in great danger the moment they're born. So they have to start walking as soon as they leave their mother's womb. Calves normally stand within 30 minutes of birth. Research shows that half of newborn giraffes fall prey to hyenas, lions, and other predators. The number of deaths among vulnerable calves increases in areas with higher predator density. Calves can eventually run faster than their adult counterparts, but they’re still safest from predators under their mother's watch.
