March 8, 2018 - Over 100,000 breeding pairs of penguins nest on this island—which also happens to be an active volcano. Located near the tip of the Antarctic peninsula, the volcano's caldera acts as a safe harbor for humans and wildlife alike. Called Deception Island, it has erupted several times since humans first set foot in the region around 1820. Eruptions permanently closed Chilean and British research bases. Weather conditions can change rapidly, making tourism difficult.
