February 15, 2018 - When Jimbo the Kodiak bear wasn't feeling well, his human caretaker Jim Kowalczik consoled him with some petting and bear hugs. Jimbo is 23 years old, weighs 1,500 pounds, and measures 9-and-a-half feet tall. He was brought to the Orphaned Wildlife Center as an injured cub, and will call it home for the rest of his life. Kodiak bears can live into their early 30s in captivity. Other than a few regulated tours, the center does not allow the public in, and no touching of the animals is allowed. The goal is to rehabilitate and release animals into the wild, but for bears like Jimbo brought in young, that’s not possible.
