January 29, 2018—In the Galápagos Islands Ecuadorian scientists recently discovered a nursery for scalloped hammerhead sharks. Hammerhead pups are born live, after a 9-10 month gestation. Litters can number 30 or more. To afford the pups protection, hammerhead mothers give birth in coves. After that, the young are on their own. Found in November 2017, the Santa Cruz Island site further adds to the archipelago's importance as a habitat for this endangered species. The team's research and tagging will aid conservation.
