Watch a Crabeater Seal Evade a Pod of Hungry Orcas
January 23, 2018 - An amazing scene unfolded on a Lindblad expeditions ship in Grandidier Channel, Antarctica. In a synchronized attack, a pod of orcas attempt to knock a crabeater seal off the ice. The orcas moves in unison creating a wave that rocks the ice. When wave washing fails, they breaking up the ice with sheer force. The orcas finally manage to destroy it completely, but the seal retreats to a different piece of ice before finally escaping once and for all.

An amazing scene unfolded on a Lindblad expeditions ship in Grandidier Channel, Antarctica.
Guests onboard the National Geographic Explorer witnessed a pod of orcas hunting together.
Named Kevin by the group, a Crabeater seal evades the orcas by climbing onto a piece of ice.
The group of intelligent orcas moves in unison creating a wave that rocks the ice.
Their effort to wave-wash the seal off the ice is a tactic specific to this species.
When wave washing fails, the pod of orcas try breaking up the ice with sheer force.
With each hit, the ice breaks apart more before the orcas finally manage to destroy it completely.
Kevin then finds a different piece of ice to retreat to before finally escaping once and for all.
