Tiny Rescued Antelope Makes an Unlikely Friend
Jan. 12, 2018 - A mismatched pair of baby antelope have formed a close bond...here at a Kenya field office of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Sala, the larger one, is a kind of antelope called a kudu. Toto—just a week old—is a dik-dik. The two were rescued from adjoining national parks in Kenya. Less than a year old, Sala arrived in March 2017; Toto, in late November. 'Antelope' is a term for more than 100 loosely related hoofed mammals. Dik-dik are among the smallest. Kudu are genetically closer to cows and buffalo than to dik-dik. But, as their caregivers report, Sala and Toto became companions right away…with the slightly elder antelope taking an almost parental role.
