Dec. 5, 2017 - The answer to America’s opioid crisis may come from a surprising source—the ocean. Scientists are studying the venom of various sea snails, slugs, and mollusks ... as non-addictive alternatives to pain management. Lacking most methods of predation, like teeth or arms, the marine animals use venom to numb and capture their prey. The researchers hope to use the numbing qualities of the venom to help combat pain and inflammation in humans—instead of turning to highly addictive opioids.
