Watch These Giant Whales Visit an Ocean ‘Day Spa’
Transcript
Like humans, these bowhead whales enjoy a bit of pampering.
The whales are rubbing their bodies against large boulders, as a way to remove loose, dead skin.
PhD candidate Sarah Fortune spotted this behavior while studying bowhead whales in Cumberland Sound in the Canadian Arctic.
“It was like a bowhead whale day spa,” she said.
Whales regularly molt, or shed the top layer of dead skin.
These bowheads come specifically to Cumberland Sound to exfoliate their skin using the rocks.
