Moon Bear With Massive Tongue Treated by Vets
Transcript
Nyan htoo, an 18-month-old moon bear, has endured a painful life.
His tongue was so swollen that it dragged across the floor …
and so heavy he had to rest his head on his cage to support the extra weight.
The exact cause of Nyan htoo’s condition was unknown.
A 2016 surgery to remove excess tissue failed to stop the swelling.
Despite this, Nyan htoo continued to play with his brother, Kan htoo, at a monastery in Myanmar.
Monks rescued the pair from wildlife traffickers when they were cubs.
Their caretakers knew they needed the help of experts so Nyan htoo can live without suffering.
An international team of animal welfare experts and surgeons travelled to Myanmar, where they worked with local vets to treat Nyan htoo.
The team removed 6.6 pounds of tissue in a surgery that lasted four hours.
This lucky moon bear is apparently recovering well and is on his way to live a normal, playful life.
