August 10, 2017 - 520 elephants were moved between reserves in Africa in one of the biggest translocations ever. The elephants traveled more than 200 miles from reserves in southern Malawi to a r eserve in the northern part of the country. Conservationists tranquilized the elephants from helicopters and moved them onto trucks via crane. They were then put into crates and woken up before undertaking the drive to their new home. The elephants rested in a facility for 12 to 24 hours before being released into the sanctuary. Overcrowding in their old reserves led to increased conflicts with humans, prompting the move. Conservationists hope that the new reserve will offer more space and safety.
