Heavy rains have caused massive flooding in southern and central China.
Riverbanks along the Yangtze River have overflowed … and floodwaters have destroyed towns, farmland and roads.
Both professional rescuers and ordinary neighbors took part in rescue efforts.
Disaster response in China has improved which has lowered flood fatalities overall.
Widespread flooding in southern and central China is common during the rainy season.
But development and infrastructure changes have made the flooding worse.
Natural elements like mangroves can lessen the effects of flooding … but they are being razed and paved over.
This season’s floods have killed dozens of people and displaced over a million so far.
