May 20, 2017 - After a prolonged drought, this Guatemalan lake all but disappeared. Lake Atescatempa, in southern Guatemala near the border with El Salvador was once known for its vast blue-green waters that supported fishing and tourism industries for a nearby town. Now it's little more than a few muddy puddles, littered with shells. Struggling with hunger, many people impacted by the drought depend on food rations. The drought affects Central America's Dry Corridor, spanning from Guatemala to Panama. Climate change is likely a contributing factor while human activity, such as resource extraction and agricultural malpractice, could also be to blame.
