Jan. 18, 2017 - A photographer aboard a plane traveling from Oslo to Tromso, Norway, was in for a special treat when he was allowed inside the cockpit to film the northern lights, or aurora borealis
. The lights put on a show for the duration of the flight.

A photographer captured the northern lights from the cockpit of a plane flying above Norway.
These auroras occur when Earth’s magnetic field is hit by solar particles, resulting in geomagnetic storms.
When the particles smash into oxygen and nitrogen molecules in our atmosphere ...
those molecules glow from the infusion of energy, resulting in these colorful auroras.
On rare occasions, geomagnetic storms can interrupt communication systems that planes rely on.
