Play or Prey? Watch Walruses Interact With Seabirds
Transcript
Are these walruses playing, or preying?
Maybe both.
Kolyuchin Island, Chukchi Sea
You might not think of walruses as the most playful creatures.
(Just look at them.)
But researchers observed them interacting with seabirds.
Sometimes, a walrus would approach and splash a bird.
Other times, it would sneak up from underneath the water and attack with its tusks.
Walruses were also observed playing with birds that had already died.
Fun for the walruses?
Maybe.
Fun for the living seabirds?
TBD.
