Meet the Giant Cave-Dwelling Tortoises of the Seychelles
Transcript
ON-SCREEN TEXT:
Temperatures on Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles can soar up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit.
Giant tortoises must find shade or risk overheating and death.
These Aldabra tortoises have been cooling down in an unlikely place...caves!
Now researchers are studying whether shelter in caves is more beneficial than other types of shade.
The tortoises may also be creating a unique cave ecosystem, by depositing dung that feeds other Aldabra animals—like crabs and insects.
