North Carolina’s barrier islands, known as the
Outer Banks, are eroding as the sea level rises. This means some land—and homes—will be swallowed by ocean, and the people who live there must cope with the immediate impacts of climate change. Money has been spent to keep the sand in place, but Mother Nature keeps pushing back.
