How would you track an elusive jaguar? Easy! Follow their poo!
I'm Lucie McNeil and this is National Geographic On Assignment—your link to thousands of Nat Geo Explorers working around the world.
Today we're off to Northeastern Argentina. National Geographic's Karen DeMatteo is trying to find out how endangered jaguars and other big carnivores navigate the dwindling forests.
Train, her canine partner, can sniff out the carnivore's poop, called scat, with amazing accuracy.
DNA analysis of that scat can reveal which species and individual left it.
By adding in GPS data, her team can establish where the animals are roaming.
The goal is to create protected corridors where these carnivores can hunt and survive.
