First-ever video shows wolves catching and eating fish
Transcript
This footage recorded in Voyageurs National Park, MN, revealed a surprising behavior: a wolf fishing for its meal.
This is the first time scientists have observed wolves preying on freshwater fish.
Research gathered over the last seven years confirmed that the region’s wolves have developed a diverse diet and hunting strategies.
Wolves in North America are known to hunt in packs and chase down large mammals like elk, deer, and moose.
However, the recent findings suggest that the Voyageurs wolves also hunt alone, using a stealth approach to capture smaller prey like fish, otter, and beaver.
They also will eat fruit, such as blueberries.
The researchers suggest these wolves particularly turn to other food sources in summer, when deer are harder to catch.
