See What Happens When Monitor Lizards Fight Over Food
Growing to be up to seven feet long and packing a venomous bite, the water monitor lizard is a formidable foe for any creatures that cross its path—even others of its own kind. Here, a smaller water monitor has bitten off more than it could chew by attempting to steal meat from a carcass being devoured by other lizards. Now it must defend itself in a wrestling match against much larger adversaries.

Water monitors are some of the most intelligent lizards in the world.
They can also grow to be huge—up to seven feet long, with a powerful tail, sharp claws, and a venomous bite.
The smaller among them need their cunning to survive, especially when bigger lizards aren't inclined to share food.
As the big guys fight over the carcass, the underdog seizes the opportunity for a bite.
The largest lizard's attention and agression are redirected towards the sneak ... who pays a steep price.
He has no choice now but to cede this territory to his larger conspecifics ... and travel to less contested ground.
