David Doubilet: Behind the Photo
Transcript
My favorite picture, at this point in time, is a picture we made a year ago in Papua New Guinea, a place of deep, volcanic sea mounts, surrounded by active volcanoes and full of living coral.
And this was a picture made half in and half out of the water. And as we were shooting, a fisherman and his son came up in an outrigger canoe and it completed the image.
All underwater pictures are about water. And the way the surface behaves, the way you look through water, the way the water reflects things, magically distorts things, magically – that’s what makes the picture.
It’s the kind of an image that I absolutely love to take, that I dream to take. But of course, the pictures photographers really like… the best picture a photographer has ever taken is always gonna be the next picture.
