The Secret Ingredient for This Delicious Soup? Rocks.

In The Path of Stone Soup, filmmaker Sarah Borealis documents this dish’s unique origins and preparation. Borealis traveled to Oaxaca in 2010 and first tasted stone soup in a roadside restaurant run by the Gachupin family, which has been maintaining the tradition for generations. With their aid, she and director Arturo Juárez Aguilar spent four years documenting the preservation of this traditional soupmaking process.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's mission of inspiring people to care about the planet. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of the National Geographic Society.
