Photographing a Mythical Shark Shepherd: The Story Behind the Shot

Photographer Benjamin Von Wong had quite a few obstacles while working on his underwater project. Some of those are straightforward: having only a certain amount of oxygen, cold water, a small window of natural light, nonexistent underwater communications, and scaring sharks away. But tying down a model underwater proved to be the most challenging. Watch how it was done in this short film and learn what the "Shark Shepherd" wants the world to know about the future of sharks.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of National Geographic Partners.
