Mind-Blowing Video From Volcano’s Edge

Sam Cossman left his tech job in San Francisco to take a leap into the unknown as a full-time explorer. In this compelling short, he journeys to the edge of a lava lake on Ambrym, a volcanic island in the South Pacific. Cossman wore a custom-built heat suit equipped to withstand radiant temperatures of up to 3000ºF, as well as a special device to measure his emotional response to standing at the front lines of a live volcano. A phantom drone captures incredible footage of the erupting cauldron to help researchers study microbial life in extreme environments and identify obstacles, hazards, and optimal descent routes.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's mission of inspiring people to care about the planet. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of the National Geographic Society.
