Filmmaker Animates Grandmother’s Keepsakes in Tribute

After her grandmother, Gan-Gan, died in 2010, filmmaker Gemma Green-Hope gathered some of Gan-Gan's possessions to create a touching animated portrait. At first she was puzzled by the question, How do you make sense of all the things someone leaves behind, the things nobody sees—boxes full of photographs and bits of string? In less than three minutes, through an animated collage of these personal things, Green-Hope captures hergrandmother’s various hobbies as well as her dynamic personality. This is an homage not only to a grandmotherbut to a woman who lived life fearlessly and fully.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the Web and selected by National Geographic’s editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's mission of inspiring people to care about the planet. The filmmakers themselves created the content presented here. The opinions expressed are those of the filmmakers, and not those of the National Geographic Society.
