Captivating Drawings Reveal Afghanistan After Troops Leave

Filmmaker Tim Brown highlights the striking drawings of reportage illustrator George Butler in this evocative short as he returns to document a country that has recently ended 13 years of foreign military occupation. Butler spent time sketching the British Army during the war in Afghanistan. "I was always aware that over the walls there were millions of people getting on with their lives," he says. In 2014 Butler captured scenes of everyday life in the weeks following the withdrawal hoping to change the public perception of a place that "is almost always described as dangerous or unsafe or uncertain."

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's mission of inspiring people to care about the planet. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of the National Geographic Society.
