Can Playing With Fire and Saws Help Kids Manage Risk?

Welcome to "the Land," a Welsh adventure playground that allows children to climb trees, light fires, and construct things using hammers and saws. Filmmaker Erin Davis captures the kids in action in her documentary of the same name. Staffed by adult supervisors called "playworkers," these spaces are becoming increasing popular throughout the rest of the United Kingdom and Europe. Proponents of this type of environment believe kids are empowered when they learn to manage risks on their own.

The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic's belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of the National Geographic Society.
