- Antarctic Ocean - The coldest, windiest place on Earth holds 60 percent of the fresh water on the planet. Recent expeditions to the Weddell Sea produced more than 700 new species, including giant carnivorous sponges.
- Arctic Ocean - Crowning the top of the world, the frozen Arctic Ocean provides an unlikely home for a spectrum of enchanting creatures. Above the ice and below, beluga whales, narwhals, bowhead whales, walruses, and murres prosper.
- Bermuda - The waters around Bermuda host a liquid jungle of creatures that exist in floating forests of golden brown sargassum seaweed. Deep within its waters live bioluminescent deep-sea creatures, reminiscent of comets, suns, and stars.
- Boat Alarm Could Save Manatees - June 4, 2009—Manatees can't hear the low sounds of boat engines, which is why the animals are frequently injured, a researcher says. A high-pitched alarm could solve the problem.
- Galapagos - The Galapagos was Darwin's laboratory for the study of the origins of life. See the amazing creatures he studied in 1835—giant tortoises, sea turtles, flightless cormorants, iguanas, and penguins.
- Great Barrier Reef - The largest living structure, the Great Barrier Reef spans more than 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) of islands and submerged reefs. A plethora of coral thrives here, along with a sweep of parrotfish, surgeonfish, barracuda, and sharks.
- Gulf & Caribbean - The mix of moonlight, tide, and temperature triggers an extraordinary explosion of life in these waters. When the conditions are just right, divers can witness the reproduction of corals, snappers, yellowhead jawfish, and nurse sharks.
- Hawai'i - Created by a string of spectacular undersea volcanoes, the islands are surrounded by creatures whose ancestors preceded human beings by millions of years.
- Mediterranean Sea - The Mediterranean sea bed holds treasures from thousands of years of trade across its waters. Among the scattered shipwrecks, divers can also find rich coral reefs full of natural wonders, as well as the racing bluefin tuna.
- Monterey Bay - Monterey Bay boasts an undersea canyon that is deeper than the Grand Canyon. This rich environment is home to krill, Humboldt squid, mola mola, and a plethora of tiny animals that thrive in giant kelp forests.
- New Species Found at Great Barrier - May 21, 2009—In and around Australia's Great Barrier Reef, researchers with the Census of Marine Life have discovered hundreds of new species.
