- Atom Smasher Starts Up - September 10, 2008—The biggest science experiment ever has begun underneath Europe. Scientists hope the Large Hadron Collider will recreate conditions like those just after the big bang.
- Australian Wetlands Threatened - August 22, 2008—Australia's Coorong wetlands, long a haven for migrating birds and the fish they feed on, are threatened by the shrinking Murray River, the wetlands' primary source of water.
- Baby Whale Sees Boat as Mother? - August 18, 2008—An apparently injured humpback whale calf in waters near Sydney, Australia, is behaving with a yacht in ways the whale would normally behave with its mother.
- Baby Whale to Be Euthanized - August 21, 2008—A starving humpback whale calf—apparently orphaned and trying to suckle yachts near Sydney, Australia, for the past several days—will likely be euthanized, according to scientists.
- Boat-Suckling Whale in Danger - August 19, 2008—For the second day an orphaned humpback whale calf is trying to nurse from yachts in an Australian harbor. If the whale doesn't get milk soon, the animal could die.
- Children Mine Gold in Africa - August 14, 2008—In Africa boys as young as 12 and 13 risk mercury poisoning in mines to help provide for their families.
- Crackdown on Peru Indian Protest - August 19, 2008—Amazonian Indians have blocked roads and oil and gas projects in Peru to protest a new law that makes it easier for the government to sell their lands.
- Deadly Hanna Deluges Haiti - September 4, 2008—"If I couldn't swim, I would have been dead," said one Haitian survivor after tropical storm Hanna caused massive flooding, cutting off one city and killing dozens.
- Dogsledding Without Snow - September 3, 2008—Australia sees little snow, but that doesn't stop some enthusiasts from "dogsledding." How? Just add wheels.
- Egypt Palace on Fire - August 20, 2008—The 19th-century Cairo palace that houses Egypt's upper house of parliament was heavily damaged, and at least 13 people were hurt.
- Giant River Stingrays Found - July 22, 2008—After an exhaustive search, an explorer finds one of the elusive rays—perhaps the largest freshwater fish—near Bangkok. And then it gives birth.
- Giant Waves Crash Over Buildings - September 9, 2008—Surging over buildings as tall as five stories, waves from Hurricane Ike pounded a Cuban town on Monday. The hurricane is headed for the U.S. Gulf Coast.

- Pristine Islands to Be Protected - August 26, 2008—U.S. President George W. Bush has proposed marine national monuments around several U.S.-held islands in the Pacific Ocean. It could become the world's largest protected area.
- Putin Tranquilizes Tiger - September 2, 2008—Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin helped scientists collar a huge Siberian tiger by shooting it with a tranquilizer gun.
- Quake Pandas Hanging On - September 5, 2008—A major earthquake this year in China had a lasting impact on the population of giant pandas, killing at least one of the animals—plus five people who had been working to preserve the species.
