- The Pinker Tones—"Sonido Total" - Based in Barcelona, Spain, this pop duo of Mister Furia and Professor Manso make Day-Glo Catalan pop inflected with indie rock minimalism.
- The Pogues—"A Pair of Brown Eyes" - In the 1980s the Pogues combined the lyricism of traditional Irish music with the energy of punk. This classic comes from their second album, 1985's Rum, Sodomy and The Lash.
- The Special AKA—"Free Nelson Mandela" - Few groups combined politics and dancing as well as England's The Special AKA, as this prophetic 1984 classic attests. Ten years later, Mandela would be elected president of South Africa and the racist apartheid system dismantled.
- The Specials—"Gangsters" - The Specials spearheaded the British ska revival of the late 1970s with this classic hit from 1979, which spent weeks at the top of the UK charts.
- The Specials—"Ghost Town" - The Specials reinvented Jamaican ska for the British pop charts and gave it a political message in the late '70s. 1981's "Ghost Town" was their last single and one of their biggest hits.

- Traband—"Cernej Pasajer" - Czech band Traband plays a whimsical fusion of pop, folk-rock, and Bohemian and Moravian folk influences. The band plays raucously, with the signature sound of Jana Modràckovà's trumpet at the fore.
- U2—"I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" - On this track Irish rockers U2 collaborated with will.i.am and legendary producer Brian Eno. Bono has stated that some of the lyrics were inspired by Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
- Vinicio Capossela—"Il Ballo Di San Vito" - Vinicio Capossela has been called "The Italian Tom Waits" for his scruffy style and quirky, off-kilter songs.
- Vinicio Capossela—"Maraja'" - Vinicio Capossela rose to the top of the Italian underground music scene in the 1990s. In his music he has sought inspiration from American musician Tom Waits as well as diverse forms of Italian folk music.
- Wasis Diop—"Automobile Mobile" - In the 1970s Wasis Diop moved from Senegal to Paris to study engineering. Once there he changed course to form a West African music group and launched his solo career in 1979. In "Automobile Mobile" he laments the crowding and pollution in cities.
- Yael Naim—"New Soul" - Israeli-French singer Yael Naim captured the world's attention in 2008 when this winsome, enchanting single was picked up by Apple for the ad campaign for MacBook Air.
- Yannick Noah—"Destination Ailleurs" - Former tennis champion Yannick Noah has found musical success in France through songs that explore his African roots.
- Zap Mama—"Bandy Bandy" - Led by singer Marie Daulne, Belgian group Zap Mama combine hip-hop, R&B, and African pop with a global sensibility.
- Zuco 103—"Treasure" - Dutch group Zuco 103 explores the music of singer Lilian Vieira's homeland, Brazil.
