How Becoming a Hostage and Losing a Finger Made Him a Better Climber

A rock climbing trip in Kyrgyzstan takes a turn for the worse when armed rebels take Tommy Caldwell and his friends hostage. Tommy is forced to make a choice between he and his friend's lives and that of his captor's. (The man referenced at the end of the hostage story survives and is later captured by authorities.) To add insult to injury, Tommy loses a finger and is forced to reconsider whether he can continue his profession as a rock climber.
