Kayakers Are the First to Conquer Harrowing Gorges of the “Grand Canyon Pacific”

In June, the American/Brazilian kayaking team of Ben Stookesberry, Chris Korbulic, Ben Marr, and Pedro Oliva paddled, portaged, climbed, and rappelled to complete the first descent of the “Grand Canyon Pacific,” the Beriman River in Papua New Guinea. The river is reputedly one of the South Pacific’s most challenging for kayakers.

Ben Stookesberry, Chris Korbulic, Ben Marr, and Pedro Oliva are 2016 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year.
