Mountain Lion Kittens Spotted on Camera

January 20, 2016 - Two mountain lion kittens were recently discovered in the Santa Monica Mountains. The male and female kittens, known as P-46 and P-47, are the third litter from their mother, P-19, which biologists have been tracking since 2010. Biologists say it's a positive sign to see kittens on the outskirts of a developed area, though the young lions will face numerous challenges to their survival, including highway traffic and competition from other mountain lions. P-19's previous two litters were the result of inbreeding in this isolated habitat, and testing is being done to determine if the new litter was fathered by a newly discovered outside male, which would mean a crucial infusion of fresh genes.
