Are Utah's Beautiful Salt Flats Disappearing?

Aug. 10, 2015 - For the second year in a row, Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats has been canceled because the salt was either too wet or too muddy. During the annual event, sponsored by the Southern California Timing Association, cars race across Utah's famous salt flats. Races have taken place there for over a hundred years, but the flats need to be dry and stable. Although there's disagreement as to the cause of the altered conditions, a number of factors are believed to be at work, including climate change and the extraction of potassium from the site by commercial mining companies.
