POV: Why Are Leopard Seals Eating So Many Fur Seal Pups?

August 7, 2015 - Leopard seals relentlessly attack fur seal pups and epically battle one another for food in this never before seen footage. Working in the NOAA Fisheries study area at Cape Shirreff, Antarctica, researchers attached National Geographic Crittercams to leopard seals, and the POV footage is riddled with jaw-dropping images and discoveries. Newly observed behaviors like kleptoparasitism and food caching are helping scientists understand how these apex predators adapt to climate change—and how these adaptations are affecting the ecosystem as a whole.
