The Men Buried Beneath a 400-Year-Old Church

July 28, 2015 - Four men buried more than 400 years ago under a church in the Jamestown colony have now been identified. Scientists from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation at Historic Jamestown say that the four men were prominent leaders of the first permanent English settlement in North America and thatthe find yields new insights into life, death, and religion in early America. They are the Reverend Robert Hunt, a priest in the church; Capt. Gabriel Archer, a Roman Catholic living possibly in secret among the members of the Anglican Church; Sir Ferdinando Wainman, the first English knight to be buried in America; and Capt. William West, a military leader.
