Solar-Powered Plane Continues Round-the-World Journey

May 8, 2015 - On April 21, Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard landed the Solar Impulse 2 in Nanjing, China, completing the sixth of 12 legs in a journey around the world. He and André Borschberg have taken turns piloting the solar-powered plane, which took off on its first leg from Abu Dhabi on March 9. Piccard and Borschberg now face the most challenging leg of the trip, as they attempt to fly across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. The Solar Impulse 2 could become the first plane to complete a solar-powered flight around the world—a trip the duo hopes will highlight the potential of renewable energy.
