Rebuilding an "Ocean" in the Middle of the Desert

July 18, 2014 - Biosphere 2’s 676,000-gallon ocean was originally designed in the 1980s as a coral reef. But it was expensive to maintain, and the coral died. The ocean was under threat of elimination, but the current stewards at the University of Arizona have big plans. They're making their ocean into a replica of the nearby Gulf of California, the body of water that influences Biosphere 2's desert surroundings.
