        03. The Second Step

        For Mallory and Irvine to have succeeded in their summit attempt in 1924, they would have had to free climb the notorious Second Step, an overhanging rock formation at 28,000 feet (8,534 meters). But before Conrad Anker's expedition, there had never been a confirmed free climb of this treacherous route.
