Battle for the Elephants Episode 1: The Plight of the Elephant
Since the opening up of the Chinese market and the growth of its economy, ivory—once a precious material reserved for the ruling elite—has become increasingly available to the growing Chinese middle class. Journalist Bryan Christy explores the ancient Chinese tradition of carving ivory and reveals that what was once left to the hands of skilled artisans is now big business for large-scale carving factories. Battle for the Elephants airs February 27th at 9PM on PBS. Check local listings.
