Warriors for Conservation
Researchers spend countless hours in the field documenting animal behavior in unfamiliar and even dangerous wilderness. So why not hand over animal observation to those who know the landscape best?
National Geographic explorer and lion conservationist Shivani Bhalla did just that. As the "eyes and ears of the Bush," Shivani has enlisted the help of Samburu warriors in northern Kenya to help collect data on daily lion and wildlife sightings. Since the program's start in 2010, Warrior Watch has tripled in size is expected to continue growing.
Having never been given the chance to attend school, the warriors asked for reading and writing lessons in return for their services.
Excellent - keep up the fabulous work. It seems you just might be on the right track.
all those who work to show how beautiful it is nuestratierra....congratulate........
Awesome program!! No one better than locals for help and support. Outstanding! I hope countries all over the world will implement this system to preserve our beautiful, precious wildlife and planet. We truly need all species alive and thriving. Animals are the best recyclers on the planet earth. We could absolutely learn from them.
Amazing story! What an excellent example of how to work with locals. Showing these people that their insights into the world they live in are valued by modern science and that their views are important in shaping future conservation decisions. Empowering the people with education to do what they do everyday...no graduate student has even a small fraction of the animal observation skills as these natives. This is a great program!
I congratulate all those who work to show how beautiful it is our land
