CITY ON THE SEA
Shanghai means "City on the Sea," and the sea has indeed brought Shanghai much of its considerable wealth over the ages, from the old silk and opium trade to its present role as China's leading manufacturing center and a port that handles almost a third of China's trade. This city's history can be seen along the Bund, the waterfront boulevard that hosts magnificent hotels and banks overlooking the new commercial area of Pudong.
